Invisible Grill: A Modern Safety Solution for Homes

Close-up of invisible grill cables with a sunset city view

An invisible grill is a row of thin, high-tensile stainless steel cables stretched between aluminium tracks. It guards a balcony, window or staircase as firmly as a traditional grill, but from a few steps away it almost disappears. You keep the view, the light and the breeze — and children and pets stay safe.

That combination is why invisible grills have become the default choice in new high-rise apartments across Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru and other cities. This guide explains how they work, where they make sense and what to check before you install one.

How an invisible grill works

Each grill has three parts:

  • Cables — at GaaRadha we use 316 marine-grade stainless steel cable of 2 mm diameter, rated for a tensile impact of up to 400 kg.
  • Tracks — aluminium channels fixed at the top and bottom (or the sides, for horizontal installations) that hold the cables in line.
  • Tensioners and fittings — stainless components that pull every cable tight so the whole panel behaves as one firm barrier.

Because the load is shared across many tensioned cables, the grill resists leaning, pushing and climbing. The cables are spaced 2″, 3″ or 4″ apart and can run vertically or horizontally, depending on the opening and who uses the space.

Why families are switching from box grills

Traditional MS box grills do their job, but they come with trade-offs most people simply accept: they rust, need repainting every few years, darken rooms and make a balcony feel like a cage. Invisible grills remove most of those compromises.

  • The view stays open. Slim cables barely register against a skyline, a sea view or greenery.
  • No rust, no painting. 316 stainless steel is designed for humid and coastal air, so monsoons do not leave stains.
  • Child and pet safe. With 2″ or 3″ spacing, a child cannot fit their head or body between the cables.
  • Safer in emergencies. Unlike welded grills, cables can be cut with a standard cutter if you ever need to escape in a fire.
  • Cleaner facade. Many housing societies prefer invisible grills because they do not change how the building looks from outside.

Where you can install an invisible grill

Invisible grill installed above a glass railing in an apartment tower

Balconies

The most common use. A full-height grill closes the open space above the railing so children can play and you can still sit out with an unblocked view.

Windows and French windows

Openable windows in high-rise flats are a real risk point, especially in children’s rooms. Cables fitted inside the window frame keep air flowing while closing the gap.

Staircases, duplexes and voids

Internal staircases, mezzanines and double-height living rooms often have gaps in the railing. Horizontal cables at close spacing fill them neatly without blocking light.

Railings and glass balustrades

Many new towers have low or glass railings. An invisible grill raises the protected height without drilling into the glass.

We also install invisible grills in schools, hospitals, hotels, villas and commercial buildings — anywhere an opening needs to be safe without looking closed. See the full invisible grill product page for specifications.

Choosing the right cable spacing

Spacing Best for
2″ Homes with toddlers and small pets; also discourages pigeons
3″ Homes with older children; a good balance of safety and openness
4″ Adult-only spaces, offices and areas where the view matters most

During a site visit we look at the height of the floor, the railing, who uses the space and the direction of the wind before recommending spacing and orientation.

What to check before you install

  1. Cable grade. Ask specifically for 316 stainless steel. Lower grades can rust, especially near the coast.
  2. Cable diameter and rating. Know the diameter and the load the cable is rated for.
  3. Fixing points. On high floors the tracks should be anchored into the slab and the parapet, not only into the railing.
  4. Society rules. Inform your housing society. Invisible grills are usually approved more easily than box grills, and a good installer will share product details for the committee.
  5. A written quote. Pricing is usually per square foot. Make sure the quote states area, spacing, material and installation charges clearly. Our invisible grill price guide explains what drives cost.

Caring for an invisible grill

Maintenance is minimal. Wipe the cables with a damp cloth every few months, especially after the dusty season, and check that the tension feels even. If a cable ever slackens, it can be re-tensioned in minutes — there is nothing to repaint.

Frequently asked questions

How strong is an invisible grill?

Each 2 mm 316 stainless steel cable is rated for a tensile impact of up to 400 kg. Because many cables share the load, the panel holds firmly against leaning and accidental falls.

Can children squeeze through the cables?

Not with the right spacing. We recommend 2″ spacing for homes with toddlers and 3″ where children are older.

Do invisible grills stop pigeons?

Close spacing discourages pigeons from perching. Where nesting is heavy, combine the grill with an anti-bird net.

Do you install outside Mumbai?

Yes. We are based in Bhandup East, Mumbai and take up projects across Thane and Navi Mumbai, and in Pune, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi NCR and Kolkata. See all locations.
